| Artist Statement |
| Growing up in California and Pennsylvania, and settling in Orlando, Florida in 1976, I have triumphed over a challenging childhood (orphaned at fourteen, and raised by stepparents) to have survived, and go on to be a productive adult. My paintings and sculptures had won prizes as a child and as an adult, but more predictive of my current work's emotional punch was the painting I made at age fifteen for my stepfather, which caused him to lock himself in his bedroom weeping. |
| This is not to say that viewers will go cry in their rooms too, but that my images, while enigmatic, do speak to feelings rarely allowed expression in our culture (except, in a debased form, to sell pizza, mouthwash and cars) I pursue the art of surrealism, because to me this is a normal environment, the images flow from my mind into my hands, and onto the canvas. |
| One of my ideas are the carved and peeled back rocks, which interpret the rocks as your character, I have found in life people say and do things to cut into that personality hence, the carving that split the rock and peels it back. Your character or personality will never be the same, things in life can be forgiven, however always remembered, and a part of you. |
| As you walk by and see these paintings, they don't just subtly invite you to view them, rather they scream LOOK AT ME !! I pay regard to Tanguy and Magritte, for their unique way of looking at life, along with Cezanne for his perseverance and discipline. I credit my fellow group of friends and (artists) for encouraging my creativity, it is evident I have, and always will follow my own path into the world of art. |
